Our Coaches

Ulmis Iordache

Ulmis started the Greenwich Aquatics program in 2007 and has been leading the club for the last 18 years.

Ulmis began playing water polo at the age of 5 in Bucharest. From 1997 to 1999 he played for C.S. Steaua Bucharest and participated as a 1997 Romanian Cup '84-'85 Winner; 1998 National Championship '82-'83 Runner-up; 1999 Romanian Cup '84-'85 Winner; 1999 Winner of Tanaka Cup; and 1999 National Championship '82-'83 Winner.

From 2000 to 2002, Ulmis played for LER Steaua. He was the 2000 Romanian Cup '83-'84 Winner; 2001 National Champion '84-'85 Third Place finisher; and 2002 National Championship '84-'85 Winner. On the Romanian National Team in 1999 to 2002 '83-'84, Ulmis played in the qualifying of the European Championship in Belgrade and was winner of the Balcan Cup in 2000. He also played for Sportul Stundentesc in 2002 to 2003.

Ulmis has been the head coach for the Brunswick High School Boys team since 2009 when the program started and has built the school’s program to a national powerhouse. Ulmis also coaches the Greenwich Academy High School Girls team in the spring and has been doing that since the inception of the program in 2016.

Ulmis lives in Stamford with his wife (who coaches Diving at Yale) and their two sons Teddy & Gus are playing on our 10U travel team.


Kim Tierney Wang

Kim is a founder director of Greenwich Aquatics back in 2007 and has been the director of operations for the last 17 years.

Kim was an All-American at Bucknell University. There she was Team Captain and was lead scorer all four years with a career total of over 500 goals.

At Columbia University, Kim was a member of the First Team New York Division All-Conference Team and the Collegiate All-Academic Team. She was named Most Valuable Player- New York Division. She was the highest scorer at Women's Club National and was the lead Columbia scorer at all tournaments.

In 1994, Kim was a member of the USA Olympic Festival Team. She is the first and only female to join the boys' Greenwich High Water Polo Team. Kim was part of the first women's team at the New York Athletic Club in 2002 and she continued to play with them for over 12 years.  In 2006, she was inducted into Greenwich Aquatics Hall of Fame.

Kim is a graduate of Bucknell (BA in Psychology) and Columbia University (MA & EdM in Psychological Counseling). Kim lives in Greenwich with her husband and 3 children, all who play water polo. Her oldest, Sofie will be continuing her water polo career at Harvard. 

Ilija Duretic

Hailing from Serbia, Ilija comes to us with over 20 years of water polo experience. He started playing water polo at the age 7 in Serbia and eventually made the professionally league and played for the Red Star Belgrade Club in the 1st Serbian League. He was a four-time Junior National Champion of Serbia and was a member of the Serbian Cadet, Youth and Junior National Team. He served as Captain of the Serbian Junior National Team.

Ilija got recruited to play at St. Francis College in Brooklyn and decided to give the USA a try. At St. Francis, he lead the Terriers to the NCAA Final Four in 2013. In the NCAA play-in victory game against UC San Diego, Ilija scored three goals.

In 2021, Ilija was named the Head Coach of the St. Francis College Brooklyn D1 Men’s & Women’s Water Polo Teams. On the Men’s side, Ilija led the Terriers to back-to-back appearances in the Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) Tournament Final, their first finals since the program’s last Final Four appearance in 2013. In 2022, under his guidance, the team achieved its most wins in a season since 2013, winning 21 games on another NWPC Tournament final appearance. Ilija was named the 2022 Coach of the Tournament. On the Women’s side in 2023, the team had the best season in the program’s history and achieved its most wins since the start of the program. Unfortunately, the school eliminated all their D1 athlete teams this past Spring.

 Ijia then moved to Fordham University as the assistant coach for the Rams. The Rams made a historic run going 32-1 in the 2024 season and placing 3rd in the country.

Ilija has been coaching with Greenwich Aquatics since 2023.

Gabriel Maldonado

Coach Gabriel has been coaching with Greenwich Aquatics since 2016.

Gabriel began playing water polo at the age of ten in the State of Lara, Venezuela. He started his career as a goalkeeper and managed to be in the #1 goalie in his country for several years.  He then became a field player, where he won Gold in the National Championships.  He participated in the National League of water polo of Venezuela. 

Gabriel immigrated to the United States in 2015.

Gabriel has Master's degree in Sports and Organizational Psychology and was professor of Psychometry at the Yacambu University, served as a sports psychologist for athletes and teams of a wide variety of disciplines in addition to working with the Venezuelan Federation of Aquatic Sports with national teams.

Gabriel coaches the Greenwich Country Day High School Boys & Girls team.

Gabriel is also a CWPA & USAWP certified referee and continues to develop his whistling skills.

Gabriel lives in Norwalk with his wife a two children who both play water polo.

Paul Constantin

Coach Paul has been coaching with Greenwich Aquatics since 2019.

Hailing from Romania, Paul comes to us with over 20 years of water polo experience.  Paul started playing goalie at the age of 7.  He played professionally in the Romanian Super League for 7 years before moving to Germany to continue his pro-career for 4 years at two different clubs (Duisburg SV 98 and SG Neukölln Berlin). He played in over 350 games in his professional career and brings invaluable knowledge of international water polo experience.  He is still an active water polo player for the New York Athletic Club.

Paul was the head coach for the Greenwich High School girls team from 2015-2022 and was also one of Chelsea Pier’s age-group coaches for five years.

Paul holds a degree in Environmental Engineering, Biotechnical and Ecological Systems. He speaks 4 languages (Romanian, Hungarian, German, English).  He currently lives in Greenwich with his wife and two daughters. He oldest daughter is playing noodle water polo. 

Jamie Wolff

Coach Jamie has been coaching with Greenwich Aquatics since 2011. Wolff, has extensive experience in the sport as a player, official, and coach.

As a player from New Canaan, Wolff was selected for numerous national and zone team camps, and then was recruited to play at Pepperdine University.

In his sophomore year, he suffered a hand injury which led him to officiating.

Upon leaving Pepperdine, he returned to the Northeast Zone and continued to pursue refereeing. Recently, he was selected into the prestigious “Tier 1”NCAA Category, which is the highest ranking a referee can achieve. Currently, serving as a Zone Head Referee and rated “high performance” in USA Water Polo.

His accomplishments at Greenwich Aquatics are extensive, topped by a bronze medal finish in the platinum level of Junior Olympics in 2017. 

In 2022, his coaching career took a turn to the NCAA level when he joined Iona University as the full-time assistant men’s and women’s water polo coach. Focusing mostly on the women’s program, that experience led him to being selected as the Head Water Polo Coach at La Salle University in Philadelphia, PA.

He led the Explorers for three seasons with two MAAC Championship appearances.

Thomas Dunstan

Thomas has had a distinguished water polo career both at the national and international levels. A native of New Canaan, CT, Thomas’s journey in water polo began at the age of 10 with Greenwich Aquatics. After competing for various Greenwich Aquatics age group travel teams for 6 years, Dunstan was recruited for the USA Senior National Men's Team. He subsequently moved to California to train full time with the USA National Team. At 16 years of age, Thomas was the youngest east coast player ever to be selected for America’s top water polo squad. At the age of 18, Thomas was part of the U.S. National Water Polo Team that competed in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. He helped secure a silver medal at the 2016 FINA World League Super Final. His accolades also include gold medals at the 2014 UANA Junior Pan American Championship and the 2014 FINA Intercontinental Tournament. Thomas continued his international career by competing in the 2017 FINA World Championships.

Thomas continued his athletic and academic career at the University of Southern California, where he was a key player on the D1 Men's Water Polo Team. During his freshman season in 2016, he made an immediate impact by scoring 25 goals in 17 games, with seven multiple-goal performances and a standout hat trick in the NCAA Semifinal win against Harvard. As a sophomore, he contributed 20 goals in 14 games, including five multiple-goal outings and a career-high hat trick against Pomona-Pitzer, while being a member of the NCAA Tournament roster.

Expanding his professional experience, Thomas played for elite international clubs, including Pays d'Aix Natation in Aix-en-Provence, France, and VK Partizan in Belgrade, Serbia. His dedication, competitive spirit, and exceptional skill have made him a respected figure in the water polo community worldwide. With a wealth of experience at the highest levels of the sport, Thomas is excited to give back to his community and share his knowledge with our athletes.  

 

John Krill

John has been coaching with Greenwich since 2022.

John Krill started playing in our program at the age of 10 and played with us until he went off to Connecticut College, where he played water polo. 

He has had great results in coaching.  His 12UB Boys got to the b bracket podium in all three national tournaments they attended - Kap7, San Diego Cup and JOS. Additionally, he took the 10U Girls team to a Silver Medal at Junior Olympics.   

In the summer, John also coaches the Roxbury Summer league water polo teams.

Daniela Screnci

Daniela is a Greenwich Aquatics alumni and was one of our star athletes during the beginning years of Greenwich Aquatics. A National Team level player, Daniela went on to play at Long Beach State, a top 10 women’s D1 program in the country.

After graduation, she played professionally in Italy for 3 years. She played for the Messina, Cosenza, and Verona Water Polo clubs.

 She then moved to Florida in 2018 and started a water polo club called Next Level Water Polo in Clearwater. We have attended their tournaments. For 5 years, Daniela grew water polo to have over 100+ athletes in her club.

 

Eileen Loveless

Eileen has been working with school-age children for over 30 years both as a teacher at the Edgemont School District in Scarsdale and a coach. Eileen loves working with children and knows the positive impact that sports and teams can provide kids. Eileen is a natural born leader.

 Eileen comes from Westchester where she and her six siblings all swam for the Badgers Swim Club. Eileen got a scholarship for swimming at Rutgers but was also a dual collegiate athlete where she rowed and won the collegiate national championships in the 4 with cox. Eileen played some water polo growing and then become more involved with the sport when the New York Athletic Club (NYAC) started a women’s water polo. She trained and competed with NYAC for 10 years and then coached the women’s team. Under her leadership, the team won numerous national championships. Eileen continues to play water polo as a masters athlete with the Brooklyn Wets Club. Aside from coaching water polo, she has also coached swimming as well as high school skiing and track & field.

 Eileen comes from a family of elite athletes. Her father was a 2-time national champion in rowing (singles). Her sister Lea ( Loveless) Maurer won a gold and bronze at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona for swimming gaining the world record. Lea then coached the Stanford Women's Swim Team, assisted the Stanford Men's Water Polo Team, and is now the Head swim coach of USC Men's and Women's Swim Team. Eileen has two grown sons that played at Greenwich Aquatics.

Addison Collins

Addison is originally from Maryland but started playing with Greenwich Aquatics in the summer as her club did not have an all-girls team.

As a student athlete playing water polo at Iona college, Addison is able to coach with Greenwich Aquatics in the fall & summer. She has been coaches with us for the last two years working with our 12U Girls team.
